Other engines just seek to improve the position, one move at a time. I think this is a good showcase of progress of modern chess engines in last 5 years and is overall quite interesting thing to watch and to educate people, because even to current day a lot of people say smth like "a0 is still better than stockfish" and other stuff like this.įor what it's worth, of the games i've seen (I've only gone into 10 or so in any detail, and I need the help of engines to really understand them because I'm not a GM), A0 did have a significantly different playing style - it felt much more goal-focused like it sets objectives and seeks ways to achieve them (I mean other than just "win the game" it felt like it would seek to capture or trap certain pieces, or make a position).
Yet dev version with book of balanced human openings (in which actually stockfish8 performed much better than from startposition) so far scores 21 win and 29 draws which accord to approximately 150 elo difference (while a0, let me remind you, was claimed to be equal with lesser handicap). If you remember a0 paper they were claiming that stockfish8 needed 10 times more time to be equal vs alphaZero, 32 threads vs is actually slightly bigger handicap.
Ĭonditions are the following : stockfish dev plays on 1 core, stockfish 8 plays on 32 threads of the same Threadripper 2950x.
